Porcelain rather than stoneware: a whiter, denser body fired forty degrees hotter, which lets the wall be thrown thinner without losing strength. Held up to a window the rim passes a little light — that translucency is the test of a true porcelain and it is not something a stoneware body can do at any thickness.

The surface is cooler and harder than the Vega glaze, with no speckle at all. It is the plate for the meal you have thought about; Vega is the plate for Tuesday. They sit together on a table without arguing, because the glaze tones were matched deliberately.

The material record

Everything we know about this piece, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Body & glaze
White porcelain body, clear satin glaze, food-safe and lead-free. Fired to 1280°C (cone 9) in an electric kiln.
Dimensions
Ø 26 cm × 2.1 cm high
Weight
480 g
Finish & variation
Smooth satin glaze, uniform cool white with a faint warm cast where it thins at the rim. Slight translucency at the rim when backlit. Small variation in diameter of ±3 mm is inherent to a thrown porcelain body, which moves more in the firing than stoneware does.
Made
Thrown, glazed and fired in northern Portugal.

Care

  • Dishwasher-safe on any normal cycle. Load so pieces cannot knock together.
  • Microwave-safe. No metal in body or glaze.
  • Safe in a conventional oven to 180°C from a cold start.
  • Porcelain shows a metal mark more readily than stoneware; lift marks with a damp cloth and bicarbonate of soda before they set.

Cautions

  • Not for the freezer, the broiler, or a direct flame.
  • Never take a hot plate onto a cold wet surface, or run cold water into a hot one — porcelain is denser than stoneware and fails more suddenly under thermal shock.
  • The thin rim is the vulnerable point. A knock against a tap or another plate in the sink is what chips one.
