A free-blown carafe holding 1.1 litres, with a heavy collected base and a neck narrow enough to pour a clean line without a spout. The amber is in the glass itself, not a coating, so it will not wear off the rim or fade in a sunny window.
Free-blown means blown on the end of a pipe without a mould. The consequence is that height varies by up to eight millimetres between carafes, the wall is thicker on one side than the other, and there are small trapped bubbles through the body. If you want two that match exactly, this is the wrong object.

- Finish & variation
- Clear amber, deeper where the wall is thickest and paler at the neck. Small trapped bubbles throughout, an off-centre pontil scar on the base, and visible variation in wall thickness. Height and diameter vary between pieces. All of this is evidence of hand-blowing rather than pressing.

- Free-blown by mouth in northern Portugal.
Care
- Hand-wash in warm water with a soft brush. The narrow neck will not clear in a dishwasher and detergent dulls the surface over time.
- Dry upside down on a cloth rather than in a rack, so the rim is not resting on metal.
- Limescale in the base lifts with a little white vinegar left to stand for an hour.
Cautions
- Not dishwasher-safe.
- Not for boiling or near-boiling liquid. Soda-lime glass is not borosilicate and will crack from thermal shock — no hot tea, no hot coffee, nothing straight off the stove.
- Not for the freezer, the oven, or the microwave.
- Do not stand it on a hot surface or fill it with hot water to warm it.
