Four napkins of stonewashed European flax, cut generously at forty-five centimetres square and finished with a mitred hem — the corner where the two hems fold into each other at a diagonal instead of overlapping. It is slower to sew and it is why the corners lie flat instead of thickening into a lump.
The linen is stonewashed before cutting, so it arrives soft rather than needing a year of use to get there, and it has already done most of its shrinking. Expect a further two to three percent in the first hot wash.
It creases. That is what linen does and no finish prevents it without coating the fibre in something that stops it absorbing water, which defeats the purpose of a napkin. If you want a textile that stays flat, this is the wrong one.
The material record
Everything we know about this piece, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Body & glaze
- 100% European flax linen, 165 gsm, stonewashed. Undyed warm oat.
- Dimensions
- 45 cm × 45 cm each, set of four
- Weight
- 78 g each, 312 g the set
- Finish & variation
- Soft, matte, slightly slubbed — the thicker threads running through the weave are natural to flax and are not flaws. Colour varies very slightly between production lots; napkins within one set are cut from a single bolt and match each other.
- Made
- Flax woven in Lithuania. Cut, hemmed and washed in Portugal.
Care
- Machine wash warm, up to 40°C, with like colours.
- Tumble dry low and remove while very slightly damp — this is the single thing that most affects how they look.
- Press on the linen setting with steam while damp if you want them flat. They are meant to be used unpressed.
- Expect 2–3% further shrinkage on the first hot wash.
Cautions
- No bleach, and nothing containing optical brighteners — both will yellow undyed flax over time.
- No fabric softener. It coats the fibre and destroys linen's absorbency, which is the only reason to own a linen napkin.
- Do not wash above 40°C or tumble dry hot; both cause disproportionate shrinkage and a harsher hand.
